"009-1" by MarCoo (Nederland) on Jul 9, 2008

Deze serie start meteen al goed, een spannend verhaal, knallende actie en eentje die je op je plank móét hebben staan.

"Sophisticated, atmospheric and erotic show about intelligence agents." by Villain (Finland) on Jun 27, 2007

When I first watched 009-1 I was expecting fast-paced action and simple Cold War spy stories with possibly some nice fan-service as a bonus. I got all that - and some more: there's plenty of atmospheric scenes to balance the bloody action, the stories have surprisingly mature political and moral aspects to them, and most of the time the fan-service is done very tastefully, almost eloquently. Which is quite an achievement.

The series has an outstanding audiovisual style that takes a while to get used to, but once you see beoynd the simplistic designs you start to appreciate how well that style fits the retro-futuristic mood of the series. The world of 009-1 is a dark and violent place, where the borders of good and evil are easily blurred, and a pretty face may hide a deadly intent. I'm usually not a big fan of vintage character designs, so I was surprised by how much I liked the look and feel of this series.

What surprised me the most, however, was how well the conventional, almost simplistic, storylines were executed. Largely thanks to the excellent cinematography, the episodes flow at a very natural pace, allowing even the most traditional plot-devices to feel clever and fitting. The first four episodes are all independent from each other and could be seen in any order. This episodic nature would usually bother me a lot, but here it is just a minor annoyance.

The only thing I really wasn't satisfied with was how all the side-characters (especially the other agent-girls of the first episode) were completely forgotten between episodes and don't show their faces again - even when they were not outright killed as soon as they were introduced. The very informative booklet that comes with the DVD hints that this might be corrected in the later episodes and we'll be seeing them again. I certainly hope so.

In the end, it is very difficult to be objective when reviewing a series like 009-1. It is certainly not a perfect series (well, none really is), and despite all its qualities, it still offers mainly just basic entertainment, nothing more. Yet, it just happens to have that rare "vibe", which puts it so much above all the similar series that I might call 009-1 a masterpiece within its limited genre.

009-1 is certainly not for everyone, due to its unorthodox audiovisual style and somewhat mature subject-matter. However, for the fans of the series, the R1 DVD-release by ADV Films is worth buying for sure; the quality is excellent and the extras are plentiful. Recommended.
