"Getting even better with four more strong episodes" by Villain (Finland) on Sep 6, 2007

If the first DVD of 009-1 caught me by surprise, the second volume is much closer to what I expected: a good mix of action-packed and atmospheric stories about secret agents in alternate future. To my delight, the other Zero Zero agent girls return in episode 5, if only for a while. At least we get to see two of them working on their own, before the focus shifts back to the main character, 009-1.

We get to know a lot about the childhood of our heroine and her early days as an agent in episodes 6 and 8. This is quite fascinating stuff, making her a much more complex personality than what she originally appeared. 009-1 is not really a deep psychological anime, yet it spends more time exploring the main character's motivations and ethics than showing her fight enemy agents or wear skimpy clothing - not to say the other two aspects are in any way neglected in the series.

Also, by this time I've grown very fond of Ishinomori's caricature character designs. The contrast between the hilarious designs and interesting personalities works incredibly well.

There's still no overarching storyline to be seen by the end of the second DVD, but the individual episodes sometimes link to each other in surprising ways. The seemingly pointless scene in the second episode suddenly became meaningful in episode 6, due to the reappearance of a certain character. I hope there's more of these little connections in the remaining episodes.

The overall mood of the series is getting darker with every episode. It is the innocent people who suffer in the deadly game between superpowers, and the series does well in showcasing the moral dilemmas the agents have to face.

There's once again plenty of great bonus-material included with the DVD, and there's apparently also a metal-box version available, even though I don't have that one myself. This is a prime example of how an anime series should be released on DVD.
