"The crème de la crème - and it never looked better." by V. Krätke (Netherlands) on Jul 13, 2008

The first Patlabor movie is one of those films I can watch countless times without growing bored of it. Even after a great many viewings, the experience is still completely fresh, engrossing and satisfying every time I watch it anew.
Which means that this new edition is akin to a gift from the gods for me. Until Bandai graced us with this release, the seminal Patlabor films were only available on a shockingly shoddy bre bones DVD from Manga Video, which had the gall to offer poor picture quality and an off-kilter dubtitle track. This is probably the first time the movie's been available with anything resembling a proper English translation. That alone makes it worth buying for Patlabor fans. Bandai's new subtitles provide a smooth translation and reveal subtelties about the film that English-speaking fans previously missed out on.
The true die-hards can burn a hole in their pocket with the extras-laden limited edition DVD, but for those who simply want to own a good, solid copy of this superb movie on DVD, the single-disc edition provides just that at an affordable price. Lovely when something goes so right for once.
Also note that, while some familiarity with the world and cast of Patlabor greatly helps to appreciate the first movie, it also works pretty well as a stand-alone story. If you've ever wanted to give this whole Patlabor thing a try, the first movie would be a good place to start. It hits just the right balance between suspense, philosophy and action, and looks fantastic while doing it. In my opinion, it remains the very best morsel of one of the very best anime titles out there. For that, it's definitely worth seeing once at the very least.
