Description

Eden Volume One is both a brilliant love song to the post-apocalyptic survival genre and the beginning of a deep exploration on man's role in the natural order. In the near future, a large portion of humanity is wiped out by a brutal, new virus that hardens the skin while dissolving internal organs. Those who aren't immune are either severely crippled or allowed to live with cybernetically enhanced bodies. Taking advantage of a world in chaos, a paramilitary force known as the Propater topples the United Nations and seeks world domination. Elijah, a young survivor searching for his mother, travels towards the Andes Mountains with an artificially intelligent combat robot. When he encounters a group of anti-Propater freedom fighters, a maelstrom of unique characters unfolds. Graphic, cyberpunk, and philosophical, Eden is a place where endearing heroes face a constant struggle for survival and violent surprises wait around every corner!

"Great sci-fi manga" by killerSLO (Slovenia) on Feb 4, 2009

A great manga worth reading for every price.

Great storyline and more detailes in every picture than u can imagine. The fans of action and blood will be satisfyed since every bigger fight leaves blood, tored limbs, bodyes in pieces and organs looking out. But dont get me wrong since there are a lot of funny moments at the right time.

it truly deserves 5stars

"A fresh new take on the post-apocalyptic sci-fi" by Villain (Finland) on May 27, 2007

Hiroki Endo's Eden is often compared to Katsuhiro Otomo's famous masterpiece Akira. This first volume proves the comparison is fair: Both are sci-fi epics with deep storylines and plenty of philosophical aspects. Neither of them is drawn in the modern overly pretty manga-style, but in a more realistic, rough way.

But whereas Akira is starting to show its age, Eden is like a fresh breeze of unpolluted air in the world full of crappy sci-fi manga. Endo does not only re-write the basics of the post-apocalyptic genre, but he also manages to include a huge amount of genuinely thought-provoking philosophical questions in his work. He does not really offer much answers, he just makes the reader pause and think for themselves.

This first volume is obviously just a beginning of something much larger. Only a few characters are introduced; and a large portion of the book is spent on explaining the events that led to the disaster that wiped most of the human population out. The remaining chapters include more ponderous monologue than action.

Even without much happening, Eden is a pleasure to read. The setting is interesting, the mood unique and the artwork very detailed. With excellent production-values and nice additional commentary by Endo on the back-cover, this Dark Horse release is well worth its price.
