"Black Lagoon Roberta's Blood Trail" by Dirk Van Daele (Belgium) on Dec 18, 2014

Black Lagoon is the story about the Lagoon Company, a group of mercenaries living in the fictional Thai city and save haven for criminals, Roanapur. In episode 9 of the first series we were introduced to Roberta, a killer maid that ran around Roanapur like a terminator, killing everyone that is in her way of her mission. This is Black Lagoon on its best: creating dark characters with maniacal psychoses and let them loose on the world without holding back.

Roberta's Blood Trail is episodes 25 to 29 in the series, picking up where The Second Barrage ended. We again meet Roberta, however where Roberta was a cool emotionless killer in episode 9, she loss it completely in her Blood Trail. She becomes a rabid wolf when she loses her mind in a pilled fuelled spiral of bloody frenzy.

There are some minor flaws: The main personage, Rock undergoes a sudden character change: he is now a criminal mastermind in Roanapur, losing his innocence from the original series. The second main character Revy was on pair with Roberta in episode 9. Now she has lost her edge somewhat and she is more hesitant than Rock to jump into action. Also the reason of the stage change for the final wasn’t really clear for me, as the story doesn’t do a good job explaining that plot twist. These are minor flaw, as the story and characters are still very strong and the sublime action is the focus of the series.

The Animation is from Madhouse, so no worries there. The dub is from Funimation, who used the same cast as the original series. The English dub makes it unnecessary to read subtitles and in my personal opinion the story of Black Lagoon is better told in English than Japanese.

Roberta's Blood Trail is a must see for fans of the series. It takes what was good in the original series and ramped it up higher than I thought was possible.
