"A marvel of style and atmosphere." by V. Krätke (Netherlands) on Dec 15, 2005
CLAMP's Clover is unlike any comic I've ever read. It has a visual style all of its own and it simply drips with powerful melancholy. This third volume takes place before the events of volumes one and two and focuses on the singer Oluha. Oluha knows she's doomed to die, and we're basically shown how she deals with this. At the same time, she makes friends with Suu, who loves Oluha's songs (the two never meet, but Suu contacts Oluha after listening in on her music). It's a good read on its own, and it adds a lot more resonance to the events of the first two volumes. And the art is still purely gorgeous. Clover stands out with its beautiful, Jugendstil-inspired retro-futuristic setting, its cunning use of stark black and white and a completely original page layout style. Text, images, panels and spaces of black or white all work together to weave Clover's tragic story. And in each of the four available volumes, this has made for a visually stunning, emotionally gripping and very unusual comic. Highly recommended.
