"A true gem in a very Japanese setting" by Kinlyu (Belgium) on Jan 16, 2014

Viz did a good job on finding harmony between translating it to English and still keeping the typical Japanese elements that make this work so unique.

In the first volume we learn about a young boy who has been able to see youkai all his life, and it had made life hard for him. He's about to have a new start, when he encounters a powerful youkai who claims the Book of Friends. It appears that the owner of the Book can summon and command the Youkai whose name is written in the Book.

Natsume and Madara make a pact, where Madara will help Natsume to stay safe from all the youkai who target either the Book or Natsume himself.

Each story is emotional and heartwarming and it's definitely worth a try for anyone who likes supernatural stories.

"Not a ghosthunter" by NeeNee (Belgium) on Sep 28, 2013

I really like the atmosphere in this manga. Most ghosthunter stories are all about action and fighting, but this one is calm, serene and thoughtful (despite the fights). The drawings fit it well, too. The series can get a little repetitive at times, but overall the fact that they are all separate short stories is really refreshing. The ideal manga to read a few chapters at the time, before bed or in the train.

"I can't stop reading...." by AnimeTiger (Netherlands) on Oct 30, 2011

It's so nice story about a guy named Natsume who can see spirits and how he is dealing with them. If you read volume 1, you want to read volume 2 and further...
See it for yourself!

"Great feel-good story" by Robin Munsterman (Netherlands) on Sep 11, 2010

Natsume's Book of Friends is a collection of short stories about a boy who is the only one who can see youkai (spirits) in his neighbourhood. He bears a striking resemblance to his great-grandmother Reiko and because of that youkai start chasing him for Reiko's Book of Friends, in which the names of the spirits who were contracted by Reiko are written. With 'help' of a youkai in the shape of a lucky cat, Natsume starts freeing the spirits by giving them their name back.

If you like supernatural stories, you'll most likely like Natsume's Book of Friends. It has humour and drama. Definately a manga worth reading!
