Description

A brutal scourge stalks the land. Yoma, monsters driven by only one quarry-Humanity. The dark breed knows but a single foe: Claymore. Human-Yoma hybrids of extraordinary strength and cunning, the Claymores roam from skirmish to skirmish delivering salvation by the edge of a blade.

Thus begins the twisting tale of Clare, one such sister of the sword driven by pain in both victory and defeat. A child silents and suffering hidden in her past, Clare's march toward vengeance unfolds along a path marked by violence, solitude and scorn. In a land where even the predator is prey, the haunted hearts of hunter and hunted alike wear the scars of the age.

Episode 01 - Great sword

Episode 02 - The black card

Episode 03 - The darkness in paradise

Episode 04 - Clare's awakening

Episode 05 - Teresa of the faint smile

"great presentation!" by Giuseppe van Geloven (Netherlands) on Nov 1, 2008

I wrote this review for the product itself, for a story and character review you should look on anime websites.

1 - Artbox and DVD sleeve
The artbox itself is very sturdy, it looks quite neat with each side having a different part of claire zoomed in and it adds style to the gray colours of the box. It can easily hold 6 DVD normal-sized cases (tested). Inside of the big box, besides the DVD itself, is a smaller filler-box so the DVD won't get shaken up during transport. On the large sides of this smaller box are printed the images of Claire and Teresa on either side. Nice for extra display options when you have it filled up completely. The side facing out of the box contains information about DVD volume 1.
The DVD sleeve itself however has a very refreshing look, metallic copper and red are the main colours and unlike most shiny metallic colours i've seen used on DVDs and manga this looks very good and not cheap. The spine of the DVD sleeve also features a smaller ornamented print of the cover art and it makes it resemble a book. On the back you'll find the same info as on the filler-box, the preview images too are in the fancy theme used on the DVD sleeve. The DVD itself is simple, a basic white with areas left out to make the lettering. However you won't be looking at the DVD disc itself a lot of course unless the disc-tray of your player is stuck ;)

2 - Video/subtitles
The subtitles are great, they're relatively small compared to most but they are strategically placed a little more into the area of your vision. You won't get distracted from seeing what's going on by the subtitles but they are still very readable. The image quality itself is just fantastic of course.

3 - DVD extras and Artbox extras
Besides the nice little filler box this version comes with it also includes a 24 page booklet with detailed character profiles and interviews with the japanese director, animation producer, sound designer and voice actors of Raki and Claire.
The DVD footage extras sadly only contain commentary by the cast of the english dub and the english sound director for episode one. Not the original japanese commentary (but i'm not sure if there was any recorded to begin with). It also contains footage of the voice actor auditions for the english version only. Apart from that there are of course the usual trailers and creditless openings and endings.

4 - DVD coverage of series
It spans 5 episodes in total and so covers the first arc of the series nicely, while slightly going into the next. It's not a cliffhanger ending so you won't be sad after it's over thinking you can't buy the next DVD yet. Each episode also begins and ends with the original japanese songs and are subtitled. They alternate japanese/romaji karaoke and english translation subtitles each episode so you won't miss a thing.

5 - Sound/Voice Acting
I won't go into the english dubs because they are mostly a matter of taste, I personally can't stand them after I already watched the series in japanese.

6 - Final
I normally rarely buy seperate DVDs of a series and wait for a complete boxset to come out because it's cheaper, but this is presented very nicely in my opinion and has a high collecter value because of the attention spent on the looks of the packaging.
It doesn't matter in which way you look at this box and the DVD, it always looks neat and cool.
If you love the Claymore series, come and get it!
