"An absolute aural apocalypse." by V. Krätke (Netherlands) on Apr 6, 2005

This second collection of music from the Utena TV series hits the ground running. This album kicks off with "Virtual Star Embryology", the TV series' second ending theme. It's an intense song, with a driving rythm and thought-provoking lyrics sung by a beautiful, crystal-clear voice. It's followed up by six duel chorus tracks, covering all the duels from the Black Rose story arc. I like these chorus tracks especially. They're short, but intense and often fast-paced. The weird fusion of choral chanting and seventies-like rock so typical of Utena works at its best in these tracks. "Utopian Past Tense Incantation" and "Earth as a character gallery" in particular convey a great sense of urgency and confusion. The insert booklet provides translated lyrics to all the duel choruses. This really help one appreciate the songs, and the emotional turmoil they reflect. These opening tracks make for an exhausting, but very satisfying listen.

The album finally allows listeners to catch their breath a little with track 8, the TV-length version of the series' familiar opening theme, 'Rinbu Revoltion'. A TV- length version of the first ending theme, 'truth' is also featured on this CD. And for once, I was just as eager for the short versions of these songs as I was for the full-length versions featured on the first CD. The full-length versions are a good listen, but these short versions are what one remembers from watching the show, making them an essential part of any Utena music experience.

Tracks 9 to 18 feature mostly light-hearted, harmless music (with the exception of an even more melancholy rendition of "Aphrodite of death" on track 9), but the listener is plunged into dark, chaotic music with tracks 19 to 24. These tracks contain BGM that playes during scenes involving the Black Rose society, and they sound suitably menacing. On this CD, their effect is even more powerful than when I heard them playing as background music during the Black Rose episodes. The rich, dark sense of foreboding that oozes from these tracks can be appreciated much better on this album. I was surprised to find shadow girl C-Ko's theme sounding downright uncanny when it plays in its full glory through stereo speakers, rather than doodling along in the background during a TV episode. The final icing on the cake is a new rendition of "Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku" on track 25. This is the 'universal gravitation' version of the song that plays from episode 25 onward. It gets a bit repetitive near the end (when the syllabes of 'mokushiroku' are constantly scrambled around) but this faster, louder rendition of the popular song is probably my very favorite version.

By now, it should be abundantly clear that this CD is highly recommended to any Utena fan. Apart from the excellent content, the CD also comes in a very attractive package. The box and the insert booklet feature a very nice silvery sheen effect (scans and other images of this CD's packaging don't accurately show the silver effect - basically, all the gray areas you see on preview images are actually a lovely, shiny silver). Couple that with the insert booklet's thick, glossy paper, and you have a very attractive package. Nothing less would do for this fine CD, which is bound to make a great addition to any Utena fan's collection.
