"For the asking price, Dynamic could really have done better." by V. Krätke (Netherlands) on Nov 1, 2004

Most stores offer Dyanmic's Trigun DVD's for something close to 30 Euro. For that rather large sum, all you get is a flimsy three episodes with wonky subtitles on this disc. One begins to wonder if it's all worth the high price tag. Now, Trigun is an excellent series. It's very much worth seeing. My issues are not with the content of these DVD's, but the presentation. It's very nice that Dynamic delivers colourful pictures even on the inside of the DVD's sleeve and pretty disc menus. But given a choice, I would've much rather seen that money spent on more episodes per disc and a actual, solid translation in the subtitles.

For some reason, Dynamic's subtitle script doesn't want to mention the terms 'Plant' and 'Thoma' (a Thoma is one of those bizarre animals used as mounts in the Trigun world - sort of a brown ostrich with a big white mask). One really has to wonder why. Furthermore, the subtitle script was always a little unprecise in past Trigun discs. I had seen the series with Pioneer's English subtitles before buying the whole thing on Dynamic's DVD's. And on this sixth disc, it's more glaringly obvious than ever that Dynamic's subtitles are vastly off-kilter. Mistranslations and lost nuances are all over the place. You really do lose out on a lot if you only have Dynamic's choppy subtitles to rely upon.

Which is a crying shame, as this segment of the Trigun anime is as solid as the rest. These are good-looking episodes with never a dull moment. New revelations and poignant moments come in spades. The strong writing and the fast pace always struck me as Trigun's greatest qualities, and they shine through in these episodes. However, this disc is far from an ideal option to own these episodes. My issues with the subtitles were limited to mere nitpicks with past discs, but they seem to get worse with each subsequent disc. If at all possible, hunt around for an affordable offer on Pioneer's DVD with their excellent English subtitle script (recently re-released in a cheap 'signature series' edition, or as a boxset) before you go for this version. If Dynamic expects me to pay close to thirthy bucks for a handful of episodes, the least they could do is give them a halfway decent treatment.
