"Thank heavens for re-editions." by V. Kr├Ątke (Netherlands) on Nov 9, 2005

If it weren't for Tonkam's re-issuing of Tokyo Babylon, you'd have a very hard time getting hold of this book. For a long time, Tokyo Babylon books -especially the early volumes- had all but disappeared from the shelves of every French bookstore. Now that they're back in print, I'm grateful for the opportunity to complete my collection but I wonder how appealing these books will be for newcomers. Sure, those covers look very sleek. But if you're used to slick, action-packed manga spanning several dozens of volumes, Tokyo Babylon could come as quite a shock. The books are quite pricey, hovering around ten bucks each for a fairly low number of pages per volume. And if you've been treated to the incredibly lush art in Clamp's later titles, you might find Tokyo Babylon's much more sparse and crude art off-putting. Nevertheless, I found the manga worth the asking price, but one only really appreciates the story's qualities after having read all seven volumes. I enjoyed the slowly unfolding intrigue, the unflinching looks at urban life in Tokyo and the tightly focused story. Tokyo Babylon keeps things neat and simple with three colourful main players and one driving plot arc to move the story along. That gives our three protagonists plenty of room to establish themselves as distinct, vivid characters. They grow on you, and what happens to them gets ever more gripping with each new volume. I enjoyed the full seven volumes of Tokyo Babylon, and I hope the first volume will manage to hook its deserved share of new readers despite the dated art and somewhat low page count.

"le chef-d'oeuvre de Clamp!" by moonworld (France) on Mar 15, 2004

S'il n'y a qu'un manga de Clamp à lire,c'est celui-là:un scenario et des personnages impeccables,le sens de la mise en page et des dialogues en font un indispensable du thriller psychologique avec une pointe de social!
