Description

The beautiful and renowned assassin Mireille Bouquet receives a mysterious e-mail beckoning her to "make a pilgrimage to the past, with me." Intrigued by the cryptic message, and the attachment that plays a haunting music box melody, Mireille travels to Japan to meet the source of the email: Kirika Yuumura, a quiet young girl well-versed in the killing arts, with no memory of her past. Together, the young women form an uneasy alliance as the assassin duo "Noir," in an effort to uncover Kirika's background, as well as her links to Mireille's own troubled past. The Noir DVD is introduced in several unique packages, including a special limited edition artbox complete with an exclusive t-shirt.

"The story of 2 assasins that are trying to figure out their past." by NeoFrostbite (Nederland) on Apr 28, 2004

Introduction

The story begins with a young and beautiful assasin who goes by the name of Mireille Bouquet. One day she receives a mysterious e-mail from someone with the text: "make a pilgrimage to the past, with me." At first sight the e-mail doesn't bother her until she hears a familiar melody that was attached to the e-mail.
Intrigued and confused, Mireille travels to Japan to meet the sender of the e-mail. She discovers that the sender is a young girl called Yuumura Kirika, who suffers from amnesia. After being astonished by the young girls killing skills, Mireille and Kirika decide to form a temporary pact. A pact to find out the truth about their past.

Character

If you mainly like action shows, then Noir probably isn't for you. Although the show contains plenty of action scenes, the show's main drive is character development. Piece by piece, you will learn something new about the characters. Eventually leading into a complete understanding of both of the characters.

Visual

Noir is a show that originally aired in Japan in 2001. The show is presented in anamorphic widescreen, containing lush colors and a very crisp image. The show itself contains highly detailed backgrounds combined with fluid animation and it's own style with lots of bright colors. The character designs are very detailed and original and the weapons perfectly resemble their real-life counterparts.

Audio

Yuki Kajiura did an excellent job on the soundtrack, combining an ancient european style with modern techno. Ranging from soft ballads to highly energetic beats. The sound effects themselves are also very good with their crisp sound and the realistic gunshot effects.
Finally the voice acting. All of the voice actors have done an excellent job. The voices contain lots of emotion and fit their character perfectly. (note that this review is based on the japanese audio track)

Extra

The special edition is a very attractive set, including a highly detailed and sturdy art box to contain all of the 7 volumes and a free high quality t-shirt with a shot of Kirika on it. The disc itself contains some character interviews, creditless opening and ending themes, Noir tv-commercials that aired in Japan and a few promo's for other DVD's by ADV.

Conclusion

The first volume of Noir is a perfect introduction for people that are interested in the show. Reveiling a few details about the plot it makes viewers craving for more. Although this DVD isn't suited for pure action-lovers, it's a great buy for those that like character-driven shows. A !
