Beschreibung

The evil Count uses his dark powers to transform a defeated guard captain into an inhuman horror to combat Guts, the Black Swordsman. Puck, Guts' pint-sized fairy sidekick, is captured when he attempts to stop an old doctor's execution, and he is given as a gift to the count's daughter, a sweet girl in a gilded cage, imprisoned by her father in her own room. Guts, determined to make mincemeat of the Count - and maybe bail out his companion, if he gets around to it - assaults the castle and takes on the nearly indestructible demon/guard in a blood-soaked battle royal! But then, face-to-face with the Black Swordsman at last, the unholy Count reveals his own true form, and even Gut's super-sized sword may not be big enough to contend with this demonic monstrosity!

"The second volume of Kentaro Miura's brutally violent fantasy epic." durch Villain (Finland) auf 28.02.2006

The two long chapters (100+ pages each) of this volume tell mainly about Guts' fight against the demonic Count and his minions. There's plenty of gruesome action, blood and severed body-parts.

However, the essential content of this volume is not the violence, but the interaction between Guts the Black Swordsman and Puck the elf. The latter tries hard to see behind Guts' ice-cold mask that hides his emotions, and eventually Puck succeeds in revealing some bits and pieces of Guts' true nature. Still, Guts keeps acting like a complete bastard, and combined with the extremely dark tone of the story makes the book quite heavy to read. The occasional moments of comic relief are few and far between.

With an unsympathetic main character and plenty of inhuman brutality, a story like this could easily become too cruel to read. What saves Berserk is Miura's tremendous ability to reveal exactly the right amount of hints and clues about Guts and his past. The lack of information makes us thirst for more, makes us want to know what made him this cold-blooded killer bent on revenge.

Sadly, this second volume of Berserk doesn't yet offer an answer to that question. The book ends at a cliffhanger and the "Guardians of Desire" storyline will continue in the third volume. Compared to the Berserk anime, this whole volume happens timeline-wise after the anime series.

Even though this is far from the best Berserk volumes, it is still very much recommended to every mature manga-fan. The English-language release by Dark Hore and Digital Manga is unedited and faithfully translated.
