"Telephone terrors." durch V. Krätke (Netherlands) auf 09.11.2005

The two chapters in this volume of Tokyo Babylon (titled 'Call A' and Call B') form a single complete story. And it is one of the best stories Tokyo Babylon has served up so far. The story concerns three schoolgirls who have concocted a fantasy from various manga and anime clichés. They're convinced that they are three chosen occult warriors who will play a pivotal role in a coming apocalypse. The three girls never directly meet, but discuss their makebelieve adventure through the phone. Things start to go pear-shaped when the girls attempt to use actual spells and other occult techniques. They don't know what exactly they're doing, and the supernatural forces they've clumsily tapped into could at any time backfire on them in terrible ways. Enter Subaru, who's charged with the task of performing this especially difficult exorcism through the phone, of all things.

The story is somewhat dated, as the girls use a telephone service which can at best be called quaint in our communications-saturated era. However, there's a chilling ring of prescience to this particular story. It is all too plausible to imagine similiar scenarios going on in internet chatrooms or on mobile phone networks nowadays. It's at times like this when Tokyo Babylon shines. The trim, meticulously paced plot, cutting social insights, level-headed treatment of the occult and lively characters make for an excellent read.
