After DCs move to Burbank California in April-May, the company restarts its publishing efforts with new gusto in June, just after they come out of the Convergence event! The new mantra of DC Comics going forward seems to be more focus on telling the best stories they can by letting events and continuity taking a backseat to storytelling and creative freedom! This is the best entry point DC has given new readers since the reboot that lead into the New 52, but at the same time they dont sacrifice the old continuity at all! This will be new reader friendly, but at the same time keep the stories and histories of the last few years intact, which is a plus for fans who have been along for the ride the entire time
it just wont be called the New 52 anymore! It is not a reboot, but a refocusing of the entire line of comics! Let us take a quick look together, shall we?
So, whats new in June?
Batman related books
These new titles join the Batfamily line of comics:
Old series that stick around are: Batman, Detective Comics, Batman/Superman, Catwoman, Batgirl, Gotham Academy, Gotham By Midnight, Harley Quinn and Grayson.
As you can see the new bat-line is much more focused on diversity and telling different stories, with very different characters now, instead of just having 6 Batman titles that kinda stand in each others way. Batman Beyond features a new man behind the mask of the Batman of the future and the two new Robin titles show the character focus and creativity behind the new line. Especially We Are Robin, which introduces a whole team of Robins all inspired by Batmans legendary sidekick!
Superman related books
New titles are:
- Bizarro - Writer: Heath Corson, Artist: Gustavo Duarte
- Doomed - Writer: Scott Lobdell, Artist: Javier Fernandez
These series keep running: Action Comics, Batman/Superman, Superman, Superman/Wonder Woman.
This again focuses on other characters around Clark, which opens up more possibilities. Doomed for example is about a student who somehow slowly turns into Doomsday.
These join Justice League which is still ongoing. In Earth 2: Society the JSA returns, while JL 3001 shows the further adventures of the future League and the new Justice League of America features the main team under the pen and pencil of superstar Bryan Hitch (Ultimates)!
Magic/Horror themed books
These 4 titles represent what used to be the Dark Corner of the DC universe. Constantine has again Hellblazer in the name, which bodes well for fans of darker stories and a return to the more Vertigo style of the character and Dr. Fate sees the return of the helmet of Fate. Exciting!
- Black Canary - Writer: Brenden Fletcher, Artist: Annie Wu
- Starfire - Writer: Jimmy Palmiotti & Amanda Conner, Artist: Emanuela Lupacchino
- Prez - Writer: Mark Russell, Artist: Ben Caldwell
- Martian Manhunter - Writer: Rob Williams, Artist: Ben Oliver
- Midnighter - Writer: Steve Orlando, Artist: ACO
These are the newest heroes who are getting their own solo books. As you can see it is an exciting selection, with a LOT of characters who never had their own solo book before (or in case of Martian Manhunter it has been quite a while). Black Canary is supposed to be very much in the vein of the current Batgirl series, so modern, hip and cool. Starfire is from the same team that did Harley Quinn, so I think it is a fair assessment that this is going to be a fun book. Midnighter, the ex Authority Batman, gets his own series as well and is the first homosexual male superhero to do so!
Also new and exciting
Garth Ennis returns to DC Comics, with a group of weirdos that want to recruit Batman into their superteam! Harley Quinn/Power Girl brings more Palmiotti/Conner crazyness and Green Lantern: Lost Army shows what happens to GLs Steward and Kilowog when stranded in another dimension where the GL Corps does not exist.
As you can see these are exciting times for lifelong DC fans as well as new readers! Sure, a few good series had to end (like Batman & Robin for example), but you have to admit this is one of the best comic book line ups DC has had in years! So, get on preordering what you like (and be sure to try out the subscription service!), since June is coming closer and closer and you don't want to miss the train when it starts!
