| If you're unfamiliar with the Devil May Cry series and are just looking for an action novel, I'd advise against getting this. This novella can only really be appreciated by people already familiar with the DMC universe - as a stand-alone story it's rather limp, and it needs the games to bolster it. The writing style is cheap and cheerful, and quite melodramatic. This suits the intrinsic silliness of the DMC universe just fine, though. The dialogue and events are often rather funny just by virtue of their over-the-topness. As aforesaid, this makes it only really suitable for those with previous DMC experience - others will probably lose interest quite quickly. This novella doesn't unlock any secrets, as it were, that complete the story. It's more like an add-on pack - this is just a little extra bit that you can have if you like, but not having it won't hurt your understanding of the DMC universe. There are also a few continuity inconsistences with the rest of the universe, as this novella was written before DMC3 (which is a prequel to the first DMC game) was made. It's not difficult to realise how the stories and games must interweave and it only takes minimal thinking to do so, but it's still a little annoying for people who are avid followers of all things DMC. More than anything else, this is a collectors' item for hardcore DMCers. It was better than I had expected it to be, and I enjoyed reading it and it made me laugh more than once. I'd recommend it to fans, but not to anyone else. | |
